The makeup of personal identifiers assigned to owners of books attributed to Marbecke in the PLRE.Folger dataset.

There were ten books attributed to John Marbecke identified in the PLRE.Folger database. Nine were printed in English and one in Latin. The single Latin work was an unidentified biblical concordance identified as probably in Latin, but possibly in English, and it belonged to a cleric.

Four of the ten books were identified as exact matches to our edition of Booke of notes and common places... printed by Thomas East. That is to be expected, however, as this was the only edition of Marbecke's commonplace book listed in the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC). The other six works were mainly Marbecke's biblical concordance, one copy of The lyves of the holy Saints Phrofitts and Patriarks, and one unidentified work.

The works attributed to Marbecke found in the PLRE are the only group that did not have an owner identified as a scholar. There were four books belonging to clerics; three belonged to court officials; and three respectively to a physician, a Member of Parliament, and an estate landowner. The smaller proportion of works attributed to Marbecke present in the PLRE compared to other books in the acquisition indicates his works may not have been as widespread contemporary to their publication. The ESTC indicates that the only work by Marbecke which came out in multiple editions was The lyves of the holy Saints Phrofitts and Patriarks, further supporting the possibility that his works were not widely popular.
