The Identified owners of three of the books

Identifying a book’s provenance can be challenging since books often carry only fragments of ownership marks from their previous owners. Names are often scratched out and bookplates are ripped off the inner cover, or the book has been rebound entirely, cutting off parts of the marginalia or removing a heraldic crest that may have been stamped on the cover. Marks of ownership are unique to individuals and many owners who purchased their books secondhand would cover up any marks left behind by previous owners and readers.

Fortunately, for three of the books in the Bader-Hatcher acquisition, there are clear marks of ownership traceable to significant identifiable figures.
